Ciompi Quartet with Vega Quartet
Nelson Music Room, Duke Campus—Resident Duke University string players the Ciompi Quartet team up with their counterparts from Emory University, the Vega String Quartet, for a summerized Duke Performances concert. The program includes Haydn's "Sunrise" Quartet in B Flat Major, a premiere of John Anthony Lennon's "Myth of Aeolea" quintet for oboe and strings (with Duke's Joseph Robinson on oboe), and Mendelssohn's Octet for String, featuring both the Ciompi and Vega ensembles.
The Ciompi-Vega partnership is part of the 2009 summer concert series, a string of Wednesday shows at 7 p.m. that runs through July 29. (This one is in the Nelson Music Room; the others are in Duke Gardens.) Styles vary: the Mallarme Chamber Players share a bill with the Brussels Chamber Orchestra July 8. Non-classical scheduled performers such as Megafaun, Alina Simone, The Love Language, Dex Romweber Duo, Chris Stamey, Eric Bachmann and Thad Cockrell line the rest of the season. Tickets for each concert in the series are $10 general admission, $5 for Duke employees, and free for children 12 and under. —Margaret Hair
