Durham
Bruce Jackson
Center for Documentary Studies—Bruce Jackson's stark panoramas document life at Cummins Prison through the early 1970s after a federal judge declared the Arkansas prison system unconstitutional based on the hellish conditions he saw there. Jackson shot with a Widelux camera, which gets nearly double the frame space of a regular print, little of the distortion of a wide-angle lens and none of the human eye's peripheral blurriness. The resulting images are complex and full of context. —Juliana Hanson

Cummins Wide is on display through April 6 in the Kreps Gallery at the Duke Center for Documentary Studies at 1317 W. Pettigrew St. Admission is free.
