Viva Christmas

Cat's Cradle—The only rock 'n' roll Christmas tour that matters? Infamous Mexican-American impersonator El Vez comes to town on a sleigh pulled by Los Straitjackets, the hotshot, masked-face instrumental quartet. There will be backup dancers, sizzling covers of yuletide favorites and who knows what else from El Vez, who's moved from provocative interpretations of Paul Simon and Elvis (Graceland either way) to John Lennon and David Bowie. This is the second night of a 16-show holiday run, so expect some onstage spontaneity and the strange sensation that a season of Christmas music isn't a lost season at all. Killer Filler opens; pay $14-$16 for the 9:30 p.m. show. See www.catscradle.com. —Grayson Currin

Lagaan

FedEx Global Education Center—Only the third film from India to be nominated for the best foreign language film Oscar, 2001's Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India might well be the most epic movie about a cricket match. Set in 1893, it chronicles the efforts of a village to learn the sport in a match that will prevent them from paying an enormous tax, or lagaan, to the British. The biggest Bollywood film ever made, it features big drama, big romance and, of course, big musical numbers. The film, with English subtitles, screens at 6:30 p.m. as part of the South Asian Film Festival at the FedEx Global Education Center in the Nelson Mandela Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Afroz Taj at taj@email.unc.edu. —Zack Smith
