Vacancy at Lincoln Apartments

by

comment

Four months after the first tenants began leaving Lincoln Apartments, all 150 units are empty at the former low-income housing development.

The Durham Housing Authority recently announced it fully owns Lincoln Apartments, which it purchased from the Lincoln Hospital Foundation in December after the foundation could no longer afford the upkeep.

DHA won a $300,000 federal grant to redevelop a large portion of southeast-central Durham, including the area around Lincoln and the nearby public housing project, McDougald Terrace.

There is an acute affordable housing shortage in Durham, with 1,200 people on the list for one of Durham's 1,800 public housing units. The Section 8 program is closed; 2,300 people are waiting for a voucher.
