Raleigh
CATS
Progress Energy Center—This family-friendly musical about a gang of furry felines has been equally mocked and adored since its 1981 debut. But forget about those bawdy, badly sung renditions of "Memories in the Moonlight" for a moment to remember that this Andrew Lloyd Webber-composed hit is based on some of T.S. Eliot's most enigmatic poems and his book Old Possum's Book for Practical Cats. Such a notable author warrants a play brimming with Broadway bombast. Make some new memories at tonight's opening at 8 p.m. Visit www.broadwayseriessouth.com for more details. —Kathy Justice

Chapel Hill
The Howlies
Local 506—Conflicted garage-rockers from Atlanta, The Howlies drape their fraught 'n' fussy garage punk with pages from history books written by rock and soul gods five decades ago. But the four-piece isn't necessarily stuck in the past, updating the tetro with chugging guitars and anxious beats. Plus, the lyrics get surreal, and the spirit gets psychedelic and sultry. With Chapel Hill's hybrid punk-folk rockers Salt to Bitters at 10 p.m. for $6. —Kathy Justice
