Chapel Hill
Sonny Rollins

Memorial Hall, UNC Campus—As Sonny Rollins approaches 80, his monumental place in jazz history precedes him like a frigate's bow. He was peer and collaborator with legends of the day—'Trane, Miles, Max Roach, Art Blakey—and many of his own compositions, like "St. Thomas," "Oleo" and "Airegin," became standards. He outlived his peers, perhaps because of the flame burning in his heart for this music, evidenced by a performance schedule as busy as that of a session player a quarter of his age. And there's the reason to go see the "Saxophone Colossus" play even now: No one alive can blow the spirit of that life and experience, with his own supple touch on the instrument, into a crowded room like Rollins himself. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets run between $45 and $100 or $10 for UNC students. Call 843-3333 or visit www.carolinaperformingarts.org. —Chris Toenes
