Bad Company & The Doobie Bros

Walnut Creek Amphitheatre—Since most people demonstrate a willingess to adapt their hair and clothing to contemporary ideas, it's shocking to see how many folks in the world of music still sport mullets and bright plaid polyester sport coats. Have they no shame? No self-awareness?

The Doobies' former front man Michael McDonald's replaced Tom Jones as the punch line for overly sentimental pop pap, but even a wise man can't reason away "What a Fool Believes." Bad Company's third-rate Zeppelin imitation owes its continued existence to a handful of 35-year-old tracks that have seen more action than Ron Jeremy's camera. The riff from "Feel Like Makin' Love" is as ingrained as the Friends theme and, hey, equally insipid. But nostalgia's easier to sell than new ideas—something corporate radio should put on its tombstone—so they continue to cash in on moldy, repurposed blues and soul whose freshness expired several decades ago. Bring your bad pickup lines and fashion. Pay $20-$61 at 7 p.m. —Chris Parker
