Trans-Siberian Orchestra

When: Sun., Dec. 4, 3 & 7:30 p.m. 2011

Guitar-chestra medleys of familiar Beethoven overtures and holiday muzak aren't high art, but nonetheless, and not a week into December, Trans-Siberian Orchestra comes prematurely with its antiseptic progressive hair-metal take on Christmas chestnuts. Per both Pollstar and Billboard, this outfit makes bank, selling a ton of tickets each holiday season by forcing rotating stages and meatheaded guitar solos into a rock 'n' roll Christmas chorale. But this arena-packing holiday laser show and pyrotechnics spectacle can't even put oomph behind "Carol of the Bells," a rare holiday jam that packs a punch as composed. Not only does Christmas music get far cheesier than one ever thought possible, but classical sounds dumber by association. Admittedly, these songs are simple and repetitive because they're meant to be sung by large groups of people; if you must, why not stay home and do that with friends and family? Otherwise, tickets for the 7:30 p.m. show are $49.50–$71.95. —Corbie Hill
