JANIVA MAGNESS
BLUE BAYOU CLUB—It's truly puzzling, but blues and soul singer Janiva Magness continues to reside well below the radar, though she's beaten out more recognizable names like Susan Tedeschi, Shemekia Copeland and Marcia Ball two years running for the Blues Music Awards' Best Contemporary Female Artist. Magness belies the contemporary part of the handle with a voice for the ages that balances sophistication and sauciness. Tickets for the 8:30 show are $14 in advance, $16 at the door. —Rick Cornell

HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH
COMMON GROUND THEATRE—Nearly a decade on stage and a stellar big-screen adaptation hasn't dampened the spirit of Hedwig, the transgendered German, whose rock flair and gender-bending quips have broken hearts and gathered guffaws. This new version features Michael Gagnon (who is the Indy's office manager) appearing in the title role. Runs Sept. 13-15 and Sept. 19-22 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $12-$15. Check www.cgtheatre.com for more info. —Kathy Justice
