DEREK WEBB
LINCOLN THEATRE—Former Caedmon's Call singer Derek Webb once built dreamy, acoustic rock songs around moralizing poetics. Without his backing band, Webb now puts his piety against a sweeping backdrop of guitar. Tonight, he performs alongside his wife, Sandra McCracken. Tickets are $10-$12 for an 8 p.m. start. —Kathy Justice

"PORTRAITS OF AIDS IN REINALDO ARENAS"
UNC CAMPUS—Guillermo Cabrera Infante called fellow Cuban novelist Reinaldo Arenas the "chronicler of a country ruled not by Fidel Castro, already impotent, but by sex." Arenas' homosexuality—a topic of his memoir Before Night Falls, adapted to a film starring Javier Bardem—led to the author's arrest, but also his exile as a "social deviant" during the Mariela boatlift. After publishing in Cuba and abroad, Arenas finished his memoir as he died from AIDS. Colby College literature professor Jorge Olivares delivers a free talk titled "Portrait of AIDS in Reinaldo Arenas" at Dey Hall, Room 303 at 5 p.m. —Matt Saldaña
