The People Next Door

When: Wed., Feb. 13, 8 p.m. 2013

J.P. Miller was one of the most important writers in television, helping bring new attention to Alcoholics Anonymous with the original Days of Wine and Roses, chronicling the Manson Family murders with Helter Skelter and, late in his career, exploring the terrible fallout from a case of child abduction and sexual abuse with I Know My First Name Is Steven. While many of his works were valuable chronicles of the darker side of American society, the 1970 film The People Next Door is not one of them.

Expanded from a TV play written by Miller, The People Next Door stars Eli Wallach and Julie Harris as a suburban couple horrified to discover that their 16-year-old daughter is ... having sex and doing drugs (on acid, she yells, "I hear mountains!"). Unintentional hilarity ensues. Experience these turbulent times with some classic trailers for $5 at 8 p.m. —Zack Smith
