The Nutcracker

When: Sat., Dec. 15, 7 p.m. and Sun., Dec. 16, 2 p.m. 2012

There are multiple options as to how one can see The Nutcracker this holiday season, depending on how one likes one's nuts cracked ... sorry. We can make an argument for the Triangle Youth Ballet version, which is celebrating its 18th anniversary this year—after all, is E.T.A. Hoffman's classic tale not about the magic of Christmas to the young, or giant mice, or something? And this particular production features music by the Tchaikovsky Virtuosi, which is a title not easily achieved, I think. Even if you choose not to go to the theater for The Nutcracker, at least avoid the film version that came out a few years ago, which legend has it is trauma-inducingly bad. Performances are at 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday; tickets are $23 for adults, with discounts for kids, students and military. —Zack Smith
