10 years ago: Barry Yeoman wrote about the development of New Hope Commons, the sprawling shopping center in the Durham-Chapel Hill corridor. Shopping center opponents said the "power center" would create traffic gridlock and harm a precious natural area. Developers said they would be sensitive to Durham's architecture, but the "power center" is encroaching on the most precious of undeveloped land.
20 years ago: Ann Morris wrote about Sen. Jesse Helms' opposition to a resolution aimed at ending domestic hunger. Helms said "...there is no basis to state or imply that poverty-based hunger exists in the United States today," despite the fact that thousands of people were pouring into soup kitchens, church feeding programs, urban ministries and food pantries across the state.
