The Best of Springs, Sprockets & Pulleys: The Mechanical Sculptures of Steve Gerberich

When: Nov. 16-Feb. 23 2014

Mad sculptor Steve Gerberich is equal parts Vollis Simpson and Dr. Seuss. From thrift store junk, he constructs mechanical tableaux that spring wildly to life at the push of a button. Gerberich's creations take mechanical engineering principles to fantastic levels: Geese with suitcase wings flap overhead, a cow is endlessly milked by an exercise bike and a giant conductor summons a wonderful racket out of six trash musicians. Inspect Gerberich's machines more closely, and you'll marvel at the ramshackle simplicity of the belt and pulley systems and motorized shafts that power the motion. If your family is inspired, you can win a workshop with Gerberich by submitting a picture of your own machine sculpture. —Chris Vitiello
