The 2006 Indies

Triangle Arts Awards

When you do something you love, you make it look easy. But love can be hard work.

In 1990, the Independent decided to honor artists, arts groups and arts educators doing exceptional work in the Triangle with annual Indies Arts Awards. The people we recognize might be volunteers or professionals; the organizations might be nonprofits or commercial businesses. Whoever they are, and whatever they do, they do it for the love.

As in years past, this year's winners were chosen because of their dedication to building artistic communities that are both challenging and inclusive, constantly pushing their work to bring greater richness to local audiences and, in the process, making the Triangle an ever greater treasure of artistic opportunity for audiences and fellow artists alike.

This year's winners are:

Jason Laughlin and Gülden Özen of Tangophilia: Tango is love

Kenneth Rodgers and the NCCU Art Museum: Shine the light

Zach Ward and DSI Comedy Theater: Taking comedy seriously

Ross Grady: The music man

Molly Miller and Bickett Gallery: A casual place for serious art

Bob Pence, aka Crowmeat Bob: Continuous improvement
