Steve Forbert

When: Sun., Sept. 15, 7 p.m. 2013

With 15 studio albums in 35 years, Steve Forbert has quietly built up one of the strongest repertoires of any living singer-songwriter. Stardom came early—"Romeo's Tune" hit the top 20 in 1980, and yes, that was Forbert as Cyndi Lauper's boyfriend in the "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" video—but his craft has lasted for the long haul. As he marched forward from his auspicious 1978 debut LP, Alive On Arrival, Forbert reaffirmed and redefined his worth to American music with albums such as 1988's Garry Tallent-produced Streets of This Town, 1996's Rocking Horse Head (recorded with members of Wilco) and 2002's Any Old Time (a Jimmie Rodgers tribute). On a track from last year's Over With You, his flair for infusing pathos with wit is evident when he sings, "All I need to change is just the seven letters of your name." Call us sentimental, but we'd prefer to keep Mr. F-o-r-b-e-r-t around. —Peter Blackstock
