Speck Mountain, Humble Tripe, Stella Lively

When: Tue., Feb. 19, 9 p.m. 2013

The first two albums from the duo Speck Mountain submerged kernels of pop and soul in saturated layers of sound, blurring the tunes until they felt like unfocused projections. That was intriguing because you just wanted to get closer, to tease out the tunes and the textures, to understand the difference between signal and noise. But for their third album, this year's Badwater, the band expanded into a quartet and traded the clouds of haze for a recording that's downright pristine. As it turns out, maybe the surface was greater than the songs. While frontwoman Marie-Claire Balabanian sings beautifully, the numbers themselves feel flimsy and dismissible, the kind of music you hear once, nod along to and ultimately never reconsider. Maybe on stage, they'll drown it all in echo? Humble Tripe opens the $7 show at 9 p.m. —Grayson Currin
