Soul Asylum, Miles Nielsen & the Rusted Hearts

When: Sun., Feb. 10, 8 p.m. 2013

Soul Asylum were once Minneapolis' great unsung band, having grown up alongside Hüsker Dü and The Replacements but with a more polished, anthemic style. Their major-label debut, 1988's Hang Time, found a sweet spot between Petty-esque rockers and their more punk-driven early stuff. As the band's commercial fortunes rose, culminating with the '92 Grammy-winning single "Runaway Train," the quality slid precipitously. After an eight-year hiatus, Soul Asylum's 2006 comeback The Silver Lining wasn't any better, making it quite surprising that last summer's Delayed Reaction is so good—their best effort in 24 years, even. It's radio-friendly, propulsive and well-crafted, from the writing to the execution. Miles Nielsen & the Rusted Hearts open. —Chris Parker
