Scream Mask, Focus Group

When: Wed., March 27, 10 p.m. 2013

With maligned beats, a damaged guitar and a distant voice, Rhode Island's one-man Scream Mask routes what are ostensibly rock songs through cycles of weirdness. The tunes arrive somewhere far left of Joy Division but well right of multifarious noise aesthetes who push a similar setup toward more extreme ends. The band's excellent 2011 tape, Basement Yuks, arrived at a time when hordes of chillwave bros with laptops eased out light pop in their bedrooms; that tape offered a Hyde to that trend's Jekyll, with its claustrophobic tones and disorienting sense of rhythm engendering anxiety, not visions of waves lapping onto shore.
