Redd Kross, Pipe

When: Thu., April 4, 9 p.m. 2013

What:

Brothers Steve and Jeff McDonald's four-decade career began during the heyday of punk rock, when the precocious bros (still in their teens at the time) hooked up with future members of the Circle Jerks and Black Flag to record their savvy and snotty 1982 debut album, Born Innocent. By the time of Redd Kross' second full-length, Neurotica, they had fallen in line with the paisley guitar pop groups that populated the West Coast, though their punk roots remained prominent. At the height of Alternative Nation, the unabashed power pop of Phaseshifter put them in the welcome company of like-minded groups such as The Posies and Teenage Fanclub.

Eventually, their type of music began to fall out of favor with the folks signing their checks, and the group went on hiatus following 1997's Show World. The music on their newest album, 2012's Researching The Blues, was written and recorded shortly after the group's 2006 reunion. Listening to the Neurotica-era lineup (the same group that'll be hitting Kings on this tour stop) rip through the tunes on this record, it's as if time hasn't moved very much.
