--Karan Bunn, a Wake County School planner who projected in 1992 that school enrollment would hit 100,000 by 2000 and 118,000 by 2005. As Todd Silberman reported in a revealing N&O story, policymakers didn't like the implications of what that would cost, so decided to save money by ... eliminating her position. But her predictions were dead on (enrollment this year is more than 120,000), and Wake students are attending classes in more than 1,000 trailers as county taxpayers face a $1 billion bond issue in November to build schools and start catching up.
