--N.C. Supreme Court Associate Justice Edward T. Brady, in sending the death penalty verdict against Michael Eric Maske back for a new sentencing hearing. In Maske's case, the Supreme Court ruled the judge gave improper instructions to the jury. That same day, Feb. 6, the death penalty conviction of Parish Lorenzo Matthews was overturned because his attorney acknowledged guilt in his closing argument. And that was the day Darryl Hunt walked away a free man after 19 years in jail and two first-degree murder convictions when DNA evidence proved his innocence.
