Submissions were handled anonymously. Neither the initial screeners nor the final judge knew the names of the entrants until the winning poems had been selected. The final judge selected the four winning poems and the three honorable mentions from over 30 finalists.
What did they win?
The first-place winner receives $500 cash, and three runners-up each receive $250 cash. Honorable mention winners receive gift certificates to one of Chapel Hill's premier restaurants, La Residence, and $25 gift certificates to The Regulator Bookshop.
Who was the final judge?
The final judge was James Applewhite, professor of English at Duke University and recipient of the Associated Writing Programs Contemporary Poetry Prize and the American Academy of Arts and Letters Jean Stein Award in Poetry. He is the author of nine volumes of poetry, including his latest, Quartet for Three Voices, from Louisiana State University Press.
