Phil Lee

When: Sun., Sept. 16, 8 p.m. 2012

Size is no better measure of a man than success, and Phil Lee trails in both. But he's not discouraged. The Nashville singer-songwriter has a willowy tenor but the heart of a lion and the tongue of a wiseass. Both of these come together in Lee's music, which mines a languid, folky stretch down the road from The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. Though the Durham-born Lee played with Fairport Convention and worked with producer-arranger Jack Nitzsche (Rolling Stones, Neil Young) in the '70s, he didn't make his recorded debut until 2000 at age 49. He's a lifelong ne'er-do-well who still has the wit and wisdom to smile about it. —Chris Parker
