Peelander-Z, Electric Eel Shock (Showroom)

When: Tue., Nov. 20, 8 p.m. 2012

Peelander-Z has always been in danger of letting its gimmick overtake its music. Performing pop-leaning punk in garish getups of yellow, green, red, pink and black, and framing songs around space-related themes, the band does all it can to cover up its substance, especially scrappy and cartoonish romps. Lately, this formula has been blighted by a barrage of new wave-ready synths, a distracting addition to the outfit's already scattershot style. Still, Peelander-Z's theatricality provides a diversion during the rough spots, making the group an entertaining if uneven oddity. Electric Eel Shock opens at 8 p.m. Tickets for the show are $10–$12 and include a KoKyu tako. —Jordan Lawrence
