North Elementary, Corey Pallon, Octopus Jones

When: Fri., Jan. 11, 9 p.m. 2013

The long-running North Elementary doesn't get out as much as it used to, but the band's tendrils remain vital threads within the area's music scene. John Harrison, frontman of the smoldering and cerebral rock band, not only keeps busy with his solo project Jphono1 and his painting and printmaking sidelines, he also heads up Potluck Foundation, a new label that has unearthed a handful of great Southeastern acts in the last few years. One of them is Corey Pallon, an Atlanta songwriter who strangely trusses Sparklehorse's muted wonders with Neutral Milk Hotel's kaleidoscopic bustle. His balance of depressive singing and radiant arrangements suggests a healthier id than those of the aforementioned references. The swiveling verve of Raleigh's Octopus Jones opens. —Grayson Currin
