Durham's proposed prepared foods tax, a 1-cent surcharge on restaurant meals and deli items, failed by a 72-28 margin.

The vote tally was 89,367 against and 35,252 for.

Opponents of the tax included the state's restaurant association, the Durham Committee on the Affairs of Black People and Americans for Prosperity, a conservative group based in Washington, D.C.

City, county and tourism leaders favored the tax, which was slated to fund cultural and recreational amenities in Durham.
