New Century Chamber Orchestra

When: Fri., Jan. 25, 8 p.m. 2013

What:

Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg has chops: One of the world's most sought-after soloists since winning the 1981 Naumburg International Violin Competition, she hadn't anticipated becoming a musical director when the then-conductorless New Century Chamber Orchestra asked her to perform with them. But something clicked, so since 2008, Salerno-Sonnenberg has led the San Francisco ensemble. In this Duke Performances concert, she conducts the orchestra in a varied program, solos in William Bolcom's "Romanza" and leads the musicians through Strauss' thrilling "Metamorphosen." Works by Mendelssohn and Villa-Lobos are also on the bill. Tickets to the 8 p.m. show run $20–$34, or $10 for Duke students. —Chris Vitiello
