NC Symphony

When: Feb. 1-2, 8 p.m. 2013

For most of my childhood, I wanted to be an astronaut. Around the neighborhood, I'd wear a NASA jumpsuit and a yard-sale motorcycle helmet with a radio's guts epoxied on top. Way geeky to be sure, but way fun, too. The North Carolina Symphony broadcasts on both of those wavelengths with a performance of Gustav Holst's "The Planets" accompanied by high-definition images from NASA rovers and satellites. The images are crisp, colorful and organized so as to give the impression of cruising the planets as the symphony plays the music. Leave tracks in Martian dust and cruise Jupiter to Holst's dramatic swells. Strauss' "Also sprach Zarathustra" fanfare and music from Star Wars and Star Trek are also in the evening's launch sequence. Friday and Saturday performances start at 8 p.m.; tickets run $28–$74. Visit —Chris Vitiello

Price: $28-74
