NC Sacred Harp Singing Convention

When: Sat., March 2, 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. 2013

Squared around a rotating cast of song directors, a Sacred Harp chorus creates a nexus of cacophonous and beautiful a cappella music. The form—also called shape note for its shorthand notation of four-part hymns—harkens to old British anthems and Irish melodies; it also resonates deeply within the American South. The music is rife with modal, open chords and octave doubling. Harmonies pour out at top volume, reverberating through bodies and surely up to heaven. This annual gathering carries on the tradition. The event includes a "Dinner on the Grounds" potluck at noon. The Shenandoah Harmony singers, who will present songs from their new book, lead a special portion of the sing. —Ashley Melzer
