Mood Rings, Parafilm

When: Mon., July 8, 9 p.m. 2013

VPI Harmony, the debut LP from Atlanta quintet Mood Rings, balances the lulling indulgence of dream-pop (guitars that hang like hazes, vocals that climb upward for space) with the nervy unrest of post-punk (rhythms that shoot like springs and recoil quickly, oblong or truncated structures). It's not a novel mix, as you've likely heard similar refractions from recent American acts such as Real Estate and Beach Fossils or, really, any and all inheritors of New Zealand's Dunedin Sound. But it's vibrant and intimate stuff that doesn't hide its feelings with unnecessary mood lighting, despite what the name might suggest. ParaFilm opens. —Grayson Currin
