Monica Bill Barnes & Company

When: July 1-3, 8 p.m. 2012

When her company split a bill with Kate Weare at the 2010 American Dance Festival, Monica Bill Barnes explored in comic, and brainy, choreography the strangeness and vulnerability dancers encounter each time they walk onto an empty stage to perform in front of total strangers. (Our revealing 2010 interview is online at bit.ly/93rzDE.)

Barnes raises the stakes in Everything Is Getting Better All the Time, as her dancers play "Can you top this" with Otis Redding, after Mostly Fanfare takes a humorous look at the obligations and struggles of performance. The evening opens with a commissioned world premiere titled Luster, a semi-autobiographical duet with longtime dancer Anna Bass about endurance and triumph. Performances are at 8 p.m. Sunday through Tuesday; tickets run $18–$28. —Byron Woods
