Carolina Theatre—Chris Botti's warm, emotional trumpet playing pairs a swelling sound with a cool jazz aesthetic. Solos glide over an active backing band of piano, drums, guitar and bass. Botti plays music for dim lighting, little black dresses and expensive cocktails. The result is less vulnerable than Chet Baker and more melodic than most Miles Davis. It's a double-edged sword, though; Botti's music often stands as much a chance of fading into the background as impressing listeners. Live, though, Botti is bound to command attention—otherwise, why would tonight's show be the first in a two-night stand? Pay $38-$44 for either show, both of which start at 7:30 p.m. See www.carolinatheatre.org. —Andrew Ritchey
