Raleigh
The Wu-Tang Clan
Lincoln Theatre—The last Wu-Tang album, 8 Diagrams, included the song "My Heart Gently Weeps," an interpolation of the Beatles' "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" from their 1968 self-titled LP (also known as The White Album). Somehow, RZA thought it'd be a brilliant idea to feature George Harrison's son playing guitar on the song and that it would encourage Wu-heads to buy the album. My guess is that not many Wu-Tang fans really gave a shit. The fact that no one in Wu-Tang besides RZA even wanted the album to be released leads me to believe that they didn't really care about a Beatles interpolation, either. As the song goes, "Can it be that it was all so simple" when the RZA hadn't traded in his trademarked, Shaolin-style, dirt-loop production for a far more unfitting movie-score-type production? There was a time, long ago—call it the "Wu Age"—when hipsters were posing as if their affinities for the Wu-Tang Clan and its obscure kung-fu flicks made them the coolest cats in the room. Now it just makes them look immature. Nevertheless, chanting along with a huge crowd of immature, nostalgic Wu fans is an experience to behold and there may never be another era when hundreds of people show up to worship nine rowdy rap weirdos. The Movement opens for the 8 p.m. show. Doors open at 7 p.m. and tickets are $45 in advance and $50 at the door. —Eric Tullis
