MLK day and inauguration Day

When: Mon., Jan. 21 2013

Various Locations—It's Martin Luther King Day, and it's also the day America witnesses the second inauguration of our first black president. Obama's been busy fighting for sensible gun regulation, and then there's the slow-moving farce of the debt ceiling to worry about, but expect to see him on your television at 11:30 a.m.

If you're taking the day off, there are numerous activities in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. A prayer breakfast opens the day in Durham, and at 11 a.m. the annual march assembles at the State Capitol building. Then there's an ecumenical observance at Meymandi Hall at noon, which is indeed the hour and minute that Obama is scheduled to be sworn in. If you can't get away from the TV in time for this, there's also a program of gospel music at 5:30 p.m. at Meymandi Hall. The full schedule of events is available at king-raleigh.org. —David Fellerath
