Missy Raines & the New Hip, Max Stalling

When: Thu., May 9, 8 p.m. 2013

After setting a record with seven IBMA awards for bluegrass bassist of the year, Missy Raines went in a different direction on her 2009 solo debut, Inside Out. There's still some twang, but Raines mostly explores jazz, funk and fusion, along with atmospheric pop reminiscent of massage therapist staple Kitaro. She sings on just a couple tracks, showcasing a supple country-tinged croon. The bulk of the album comprises instrumental tracks of varying tone—from loose and jammy, like the appropriately titled "Stop Drop & Wiggle," to the gently reflective "Ides of March," dedicated to her late father. —Chris Parker
