Minor American Poetry Reading Series

When: Sat., Oct. 27, 8 p.m. 2012

Collage is New York poet Lisa Jarnot's fundamental impulse. She has an uncanny knack for setting language in motion and letting it rollick, leaning from side to side to veer it in one direction or another. Even her pointedly political poems can manifest themselves within a playful form, such as her "Dumb Duke Death," dedicated to Dick Cheney, which begins "down dire/ death day/ dim dale/ ding dong." She's authored four poetry collections as well as a definitive biography of Robert Duncan, and City Lights will publish her selected poems in 2013. Joining Jarnot is Jasper Bernes, author of Starsdown and veteran of Occupy Oakland and the UC-Berkeley clash last November. Bernes gave a talk about information management and poetics at Duke earlier this month. The free reading begins at 8 p.m. —Chris Vitiello
