Megafaun

When: Wed., July 25, 7 p.m. 2012

Just before hitting Europe with Damien Jurado and only a week after brothers and bandmates Brad and Phil Cook sit in with Midtown Dickens at Duke Gardens, Megafaun will get a turn of its very own at the same locale. As the band's local gigs have grown less and less frequent (blame their bicoastal mode of operation and recent choice tour bookings), the wild and wooly quartet has been able to pick and choose settings that fit its music just right. Barring Duke's recent rash of weather-related venue changes, the splendid gardens should be nothing less than ideal.

Indeed, Megafaun's always drawn a hefty influence from environmental factors: Take the Carolina expats' pair of odes to their adopted home state on Heretofore as evidence, though it's just as apparent in the way their live performances cater to a particular time and place. And whether on sunny jangles or languid shuffles like the aforementioned "Carolina Days" and "Volunteers," or on more carefully constructed instrumentals layered with electronics, the band never fails to question musical boundaries. Of course, Megafaun rarely fails to surprise either, so its just as likely to find a way to fit a long, complex improvisation into its set, regardless of how much twang the pastoral setting may evoke. —Spencer Griffith
