Mary McCaslin & Rick Shea

When: Sun., Dec. 2, 8 p.m. 2012

Mary McCaslin blends two folk traditions—the tender pop vein of '60s singer-songwriters like Joni Mitchell and the old-fashioned style favored by Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie. Her voice possesses a distinct tonality that flutters above the earthy tunes, sometimes leaning into the country twang. She enjoyed cult popularity in the '70s before hanging up recording at 35 in 1981, releasing but two studio albums in the last three decades. Recently, neo-Bakersfield country artist Rick Shea (Dave Alvin's Guilty Men) enticed McCaslin with the opportunity to revisit the duets she recorded with her late husband Jim Ringer. Each performs a solo set, then they pair up. The 8 p.m. show costs $15. —Chris Parker
