When: July 27-28, 8 p.m. 2012

It's one of those telltale signs when dance funding gets tight. Live music is among the first things to go, and it usually goes first in venues far away from the big cities. Perhaps that's why in-person collaborations like those the Doris Duke fund bankrolled around the turn of the century stick in the memory: Trisha Brown's audacious Él Trilogy with trumpeter Dave Douglas, or David Parsons' droll Fill the Woods with Light with—who else?—funky, avuncular saxophonist Phil Woods.

Mark Morrisis one of the most overtly musical choreographers in the business, and in recent years he's held the line on live music in his company's performances. In this outing of repertory work we'll experience his quartet, Rock of Ages, set to a Schubert piano trio, and Silhouettes,an amusing study in power shifts in a relationship set to composer Richard Cummings' solo jazz piano. A freewheeling piano trio by Haydn student Johann Hummel provides the basis for last year's Festival Dance, before Morris' early Canonical 3/4 Studies, set to a series of works in that time signature. Expect a treat for the eyes and ears. —Byron Woods
