Mariinsky Orchestra

When: Oct. 29-30, 7:30 p.m. 2012

Carolina Performing Arts continues its groundbreaking centennial celebration of Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring" with two performances by one of Russia's oldest and most revered orchestras, the Mariinsky. Valery Gergiev directs each night's U.S. premiere of contemporary works that illustrate the piece's endurance. Monday night, Matthias Pintscher's new "Chute d'Etoiles, Part 1" takes its compositional inspiration from the score's two-trumpet theme, leading off a program of Strauss and a Shostakovich piano concerto. Stravinsky steps to the fore on Tuesday as the orchestra presents his "Rite" as well as Rodion Shchedrin's new "Cleopatra and the Snake," written for orchestra and soprano, plus a Shostakovich symphony. Both performances begin at 7:30 p.m. —Chris Vitiello
