Lord of the Dance

When: Sun., March 10, 7 p.m. 2013

Michael Flatley is not big on subtlety. His Irish dance spectacular, which debuted in Dublin almost 20 years ago, is as much about the flashy costumes and showy pyrotechnics as it is about the fancy footwork. That's not say the step-dancing isn't impressive; Flatley's legs were once insured for $40 million, and he broke the world record for fastest tap dancing in 1998, turning out a staggering 35 taps in one second. The show borrows from Irish folklore to tell the tale of Little Spirit, who travels through time to aid the Lord of the Dance against the evil Dark Lord Don Dorcha. It's a little like a Walt Disney World Resort show, to the tune of fiddles and pipes. Apparently, people are into that: Lord of the Dance has been seen by more than 60 million people from 68 countries, and that's not even counting those who've watched recorded versions of the performances. (Those PBS specials provided endless fuel for my really bad Irish step-dance impressions around the living room as a kid.) —Emma Miller
