Before he would go on to be known as the future ex-Mr. Madonna, Sherlock Holmes director Guy Ritchie was getting a rep as one of Britain's emerging young filmmakers. It all started with this irresistible crime comedy from 1999, in which several young lads decide to rob a small-time gang after one of them accumulates a huge debt to a crime lord. While some dismissed the film during its initial release for being another quirky, postmodern caper to show up on the heels of Tarantino-mania, Ritchie's stylish, dizzyingly kinetic direction gave this particular piece of pulp its distinctiveness. This movie also marks the feature-film debuts of soon-to-be-renowned Cockney tough guy Jason Statham and former footballer Vinnie Jones. —Craig D. Lindsey
