Lisa Hanawalt, Brian Ralph

When: Sat., Aug. 31, 6-9 p.m. 2013

Not for kids but utterly hilarious, Lisa Hanawalt's cartoons are the definition of high art meeting low art. The technique is visible, the colors and tones are sublime ... and the content is often scatological and absurd. And it's awesome. The closest to a safe-for-work piece by her online is her hilarious prose-and-pictures review of the War Horse film (Google it), though you may have already seen her work in The New York Times, Vanity Fair, Glamour, Vice, The Believer and other prestigious publications. You can enjoy it in your own home with her new collection My Dirty Dumb Eyes from Drawn & Quarterly, publisher of Daniel Clowes, Art Spiegelman and others. Check out Hanawalt's work and meet her in person at this signing; we assure you she's nicer than her work would suggest. Joining her is Brian Ralph, whose new graphic novel Reggie-12 is considerably more kid-friendly. It parodies the classic manga Astro Boy in its tale of an overly enthusiastic heroic robot, and will be available ahead of its planned publication date at this signing. —Zack Smith
