Le Weekend record release, Amor De Cosmos, Submariner

When: Fri., Oct. 19, 10 p.m. 2012

Though its music is marked by sudden shifts in tone and structure, the evolution of Le Weekend has been incredibly steady. With three albums spread evenly over the last five years, the Chapel Hill rock outfit rarely makes wholesale changes, choosing instead to subtly refine its spastic but tuneful creations. Its latest LP, the magic y/ear, smooths the rougher edges of the band's shape-shifting indie rock. Expansive synth-pop transitions seamlessly into jagged-riffed catharsis ("Ask Me About My Weekend" and "Heroic Cutlets"); lyrical, psych-leaning classic rock escalates to tumultuous prog abandon ("Your Past Lies"). It is Le Weekend's strongest effort to date. Amor De Cosmos and Submariner also play. Pay $5 at 10 p.m. —Jordan Lawrence
