Kirk Ridge, Lizzy Ross, Rebecca Newton, Jack Herrick, Joe Newberry, Nancy Middleton

When: Thu., Nov. 21, 8 p.m. 2013

Let's call this one "Songwriters in the Oval," as the overstuffed lineup is likely to produce an elongated configuration onstage. Though the participants represent a broad range of styles and ages, all are roughly folk-based artists. Joe Newberry is the top draw, fresh off his Song of the Year award at the recent IBMA Awards. Jack Herrick is known for his work with the Red Clay Ramblers and for crossover classical and theater projects. Lizzy Ross was one of Chapel Hill's rising young singer-songwriters until her recent relocation to Nashville. Nancy Middleton went the other direction, moving back to her native Durham from Nashville while working on a folk-rock opera called The Stone Garden. Rebecca Newton has been a local fixture for 30 years with her band Rebecca & the Hi-Tones, and Kirk Ridge co-hosts "Licks and Lyrics," a Saturday afternoon show on Carrboro's WCOM that spotlights North Carolina songwriters. Multi-instrumentalist Bobb Head and Hi-Tones drummer John Hanks will back the lot of them. —Peter Blackstock
