Jonathan Safran Foer

When: Mon., April 12, 7:30 p.m. 2010

Not many college freshmen can boast that author Joyce Carol Oates has taken an interest in their writing. When he was a freshman at Princeton, popular fiction author Jonathan Safran Foer had the pleasure of capturing Oates' eye, and it was she who encouraged his writing. Since then, Foer has written two novels, Everything is Illuminated and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close—the former adapted into a film starring Elijah Wood in 2005. Foer's unconventional writing style has polarized readers, who either characterize his work as refreshing and brilliant or gimmicky and bothersome. His latest is Eating Animals, which Natalie Portman credits as the reason she became a vegan activist. He will be at Duke to read from his work and take questions. This free event is at 7 p.m. —Belem Destefani
