Jim Lee: Spectives

When: Fri., Nov. 30, 6 p.m. 2012

True Renaissance people are too often drowned out by specialists these days, but we need them more than ever. The case for Durham's Jim Lee is presented in the form of a photographic retrospective at the Carrack with the appropriately protean title Spectives. Known to some as the author of the Bamboo Turtle blog, which chronicles the interstitial marsh behind the Big Lots on Roxboro Road, Lee was also a founder of Africa News, SeeSaw Studio and Warren County radio station WVSP, one of the country's first black radio stations. His photographs range from unblinking photojournalistic tours of African countries to abstract perspectives on mold growth to the mythic fiction of the Rock Nest Monster. Spectives runs through Dec. 7.; Friday's free opening reception is from 6–9 p.m. —Chris Vitiello
