James Bond Retrospective

When: July 5-18, 7 p.m. 2013

It's hard to get enough of a 007 retrospective—and harder still when there's so many of the best in this one, given that covers the bulk of Sean Connery and Roger Moore. We recommend getting in on the first week, when you can see the first and best of Connery's flicks, including Dr. No, From Russia with Love and You Only Live Twice. We even recommend catching the oft-maligned Thunderball, as the oddball Connery remake/reprise Never Say Never Again plays for comparison's sake. The retrospective avoids some of the campier Roger Moore entries (A View to a Kill, Octopussy) and barely touches on Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan. But we are somewhat sorry that George Lazenby's one effort On Her Majesty's Secret Service isn't included, as it's one of the few pre-Daniel Craig Bond flicks that capture the tone of Ian Fleming's original novels. One could write full books (and many have) about the macho fantasies, inherent sexism and illogic strewn throughout these flicks, but let's face it—you're going to these to catch the famous scenes and the endlessly recurring tropes. —Zack Smith
