For years, one of best reasons to pick up the Sunday News & Observer has been the book section edited by J. Peder Zane, who also supplies invariably thoughtful essays that give a good name to cultural conservatism and aesthetic restraint. Zane's new book is entitled The Top Ten: Writers Pick Their Favorite Books, the fruits of a project in which Zane asked more than 125 leading English-language writers, including Norman Mailer, Annie Proulx, Stephen King and Peter Carey, to name their 10 favorite reads. The contributors also include such in-staters as Lee Smith, Fred Chappell, Clyde Edgerton, Haven Kimmel and Allen Gurganus. This Wednesday, Feb. 28, Gurganus joins Zane at the Regulator Bookshop in Durham for a reading at 7 p.m.
